Trends in Performance Sunglasses

  • 1.  Changeable lens systems that allow the wearer to use dark lenses for sunny conditions, clear lenses for darker conditions or simply for protection, yellow and orange lenses for low light conditions.

  • 2.  Lightweight and durable frame materials such as polyamide, which keeps its shape even under stress.

  • 3.  Styles that have a performance advantage but with sleek fashion styling.

  • 4.  Polarized lenses are showing up in many, many frames, even fashion-oriented ones, and are designed to enhance sports performance.

  • 5.  No-slip temple grips and nose pads, often made of rubber, that maintain full functionality even in the heat of competition.

If you play outdoor sports such as golf, skiing, boating, fishing, or a myriad of other sports then you may want to consider the fact that sunglass manufacturers have many different style options and utility eyewear that caters to your eyewear needs in each sport.

The first and most important aspect of buying sports sunglasses would be the visual clarity of lenses. Different colors of lenses (gray, black, brown, blue, orange, etc.) can have subtle differences in the way you see things in different sporting environments.

Choose a lens color that compliments your playing conditions for your sport.  The lens material of choice for most sporting activities is called a polycarbonate lens as they are extremely durable and hard to break even in high impact sports. Polarized lenses can be good for water and driving sports because they reduce excess glare on flat and shiny surfaces. Obviously, glass lenses are probably not the best idea when playing sports as they break quite easily.

Many companies are coming out with sporting specific sunglasses. For example, golf companies such as Callaway have their own line of sunglasses made specifically for golfers who crave top performance and visual clarity so they are always at the top of their game. There are other sports like fishing, boating, and even rock climbing that also have sporting specific eyewear from various manufacturers.  Sports celebrity endorsements are a huge way to boost sales for eyewear companies and there is no shortage of athletes that endorse their "favorite" brand of sunglasses.  Just remember, when buying sports sunglasses, make sure you buy the right type for the sporting activity that you do on a regular basis.
